In Part 1, we talked about loving thy neighbor and thine enemies.
Today, we'll discuss loving the Lord our God and not the things of this world.
Next week, we'll wrap up with Part 3, love as a fruit and our relationship with Christ.
We can find in the Old Testament and the New Testament to Love God.
"And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might." Deuteronomy 6:5
"Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind." Matthew 22:37
What makes the verse in Matthew so meaningful is that it was Jesus' answer to the question "What is the great commandment in the law?" Jesus answered by saying that loving God with everything was the first and greatest commandment! The second is what we talked about last week. Loving thy neighbor as thyself!
How can we love God?
By keeping His commandments!
"Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him." John 14:23
And not just the ones mentioned in Exodus 20!
"Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever." 1 John 2:15-17
One of the commandments given to us is to love not the things of this world. It does NOT state to hate the people of the world, though! It is okay to not like/love what those people are doing, but it was made very clear throughout Scriptures that we are to love our neighbors AND enemies. The above verse tells us not to get caught up in everything the world has to offer. The things of the world will go away, they will come to an end. Invest in things that have eternal value.
Another commandment we see is this:
"If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also." 1 John 4:20-21
We can't be hatin', if we are going to be obedient to God. If you love God, if you truly love God, you will love those around you. It's simple- love. Doesn't mean you approve of what they are doing, it doesn't matter if you even like them, the commandment is simple- if you love God, you'll love your brother also.
And yes, this is easier said than done often times, but if you'll look at last week's post you'll see several ways to accomplish this. Pray without ceasing.
Other ways to love God
- Be obedient in your tithes and offerings (Malachi 3:10), but don't let it only be in money form. Be obedient in your tithes and offerings regarding gifts and talents from the Lord. Are you truly giving God all that is His?
-Seek God's direction (Matthew 6:33) Be willing to listen, and follow!
-Quit worrying! (Matthew 6:25-31) God has you covered- literally! Don't worry about what you are going to eat or drink, or how that bill is going to be paid. God is in control. Surrender to His will!
-Spread the gospel! (Matthew 28:19-20) Support your missionaries through prayer and financial/physical support. Be involved in the missions that your church help support- send a letter, give them a phone call, pray! If God is calling your husband into the mission field, but you as a wife is feeling apprehensive, Pray! Help get the gospel out!
Ways to love not the world
- Don't accept something just because everyone else is. Stand firm on what the Bible says is true. Marriage is between a man and a woman. One man, one woman. It is wrong to have it any other way. The Bible teaches that sex before marriage is wrong. Lying is wrong. Putting things (anything) before God is wrong. Hate the sin, love the sinner.
-Don't get caught up in what the world is doing. This is a hard one. Slowly our television shows, books, and movies have been changed. Gay couples are no longer surprising. Language is no longer shocking. Topics that were once never talked about in a Christian home are now hot topics in books and movies that Christians are buying/reading/watching! Over time many of us have taken the backseat to things and it's time that we wake up!
